About Orienteering
Orienteering is the corporate outdoor event least about running and most about decisions. Teams get a map and compass, find checkpoints scattered through a forest and collect points; the winner is not the fastest runner but the team that decides best which point to go for first. This hub is also where Istanbul's inside-the-city outdoor events — Belgrad Forest, the Princes' Islands, Riva — come together: trekking, obstacle course, zipline and cycling routes combine with orienteering in a single day.
How orienteering works
- Briefing (20 min). Map reading, compass, checkpoint symbols, safety and return time — in English.
- Team setup (10 min). Mixed teams of four to six across departments and offices; each with a map, compass and score card.
- The course (90–120 min). 15–25 checkpoints in the forest, each worth different points (far and hard ones worth more). Time is fixed; a team over time loses points. That forces the decision "which points do we take, which do we leave".
- Scoring and debrief (30 min). Teams' route decisions are shown on the map; the difference between those who took risks and those who did not becomes concrete.
Running is allowed but not necessary; a team that walks and decides well beats a team that runs and decides badly. That is what levels orienteering for teams with a wide fitness range — and a map needs no shared language.
Belgrad Forest: nature without leaving Istanbul
Belgrad Forest is an outdoor route inside the city limits, with marked trails, completed in half a day; the natural Istanbul venue for an orienteering course and for the autumn trekking programme. Transfer is 30–45 minutes; for a team based in or visiting Istanbul it answers "let's get into nature without losing a day". For a delegation with one free afternoon between meetings, it is the outdoor option that fits. Around Ankara, Eymir and Soğuksu, and around İzmir, the Yamanlar and Kemalpaşa forests do the same job.
Formats that combine in the same day
Orienteering takes two hours and does not fill a day on its own; it becomes the backbone of an outdoor day with stations around it. The obstacle course (every obstacle has an easier alternative, scored on completion) is the team race for groups of 30–150. A zipline involves height but the participant is not in control; it draws far wider participation than bungee. Archery and axe throwing is the station that needs no fitness. The Princes' Islands and Istanbul cycling tours are described as a separate outdoor day in the cycling hub.
Who it is for, season, safety
For teams with a wide fitness range, orienteering is the most inclusive outdoor format; obstacle-course and zipline stations are optional and every station has a right to skip. Season March to November; autumn (October–November) is the finest time in Belgrad Forest, and in summer the day starts early. Rain does not stop orienteering (the map is in a waterproof case); storms and lightning do. Every team carries a phone and emergency number, a guide team is on the course, the return time is firm; a health declaration is requested only for the obstacle course and zipline. Participants need trainers, long trousers (forest) and water.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to run for orienteering?
No. Running is allowed but not necessary; a team that walks and decides well beats one that runs and decides badly. The points system (far points worth more, time penalty) makes decisions decisive. For teams with a wide fitness range it is the most inclusive outdoor format.
Can a team that cannot read a map do it?
Yes; the 20-minute briefing in English teaches map, compass and symbols. Teams are four to six people and one person usually picks up map reading fast. Getting lost is part of the course; every team carries a phone and emergency number and the return time is firm.
Can it be done without leaving Istanbul?
Yes; Belgrad Forest is inside the city limits, transfer is 30–45 minutes and it is completed in half a day — the outdoor option for a delegation with one free afternoon. Around Ankara, Eymir and Soğuksu, and around İzmir, Yamanlar and Kemalpaşa do the same job.
Does it fill a day on its own?
Orienteering takes two hours; it becomes the backbone of an outdoor day with stations around it: obstacle course, zipline, archery and axe throwing, trekking. For groups of 6–150 the number of stations follows headcount.
Are the obstacle course and zipline compulsory?
No; they are optional stations and every station has a right to skip. Every obstacle has an easier alternative and scoring is on completion. A health declaration is requested only for these two stations.
Which months, and what about weather?
March to November; autumn is the finest time in Belgrad Forest, and in summer the day starts early. Rain does not stop it (the map is in a waterproof case); storms and lightning do. Trainers, long trousers and water are needed.
