About Fencing

Fencing is the one corporate workshop in which a real duel can be experienced safely. Mask, jacket and glove bring contact fully under control; the electric scoring system records every touch without argument. Within an hour a participant learns to hold the blade, read distance and react to the opponent's move — and at the end of the session actually fences.

Why decision, not fitness

What decides a bout is not strength or stamina but distance and timing. Reading the distance to the opponent correctly, making the attack neither early nor late but exactly on time, and seeing the opening in the opponent's move. Those three are familiar concepts from sales conversations to negotiation, and fencing makes them physical within seconds. A participant with low fitness, more years or no sporting background is not at a disadvantage here; whoever reads and reacts better wins — which is why it works for mixed senior groups.

Session structure

  • Equipment and safety briefing (10 min). No blade is raised before the mask is on; that is the rule.
  • Stance and footwork (15 min). En garde, advance and retreat, the lunge. Without blades.
  • Basic technique with the blade (20 min). Grip, target area, simple attack and parry. One-to-one with the instructor.
  • Duel tournament (30 min). Electric scoring, short bouts to five touches, everyone against everyone. The scoreboard is visible.

Which weapon

Corporate workshops use foil or épée. Foil is light, the target is the torso only and it is fenced with right-of-way — slightly longer to learn but it settles the "who attacked first" argument by rule. Épée is heavier, the whole body is target and the first touch wins — the simplest rule, and usually the choice for a single session. Sabre is not used in corporate sessions; its cutting action and speed are too much for a first day.

Venue and equipment

A fencing hall with pistes, electric scoring and full equipment is the natural venue. A hotel ballroom or sports hall also works with portable pistes and equipment; each piste needs a flat 14 by 2 metre area, which most Istanbul and Antalya congress hotels can provide. Mask, jacket, glove, plastron and blade are supplied by us and sized for every participant. Participants need trainers and long tracksuit trousers; shorts are not accepted. Nothing needs to be packed for a visiting group, and the instructor runs the session in English.

Format options

A single workshop (90–120 minutes) ends with a tournament and is one of the most photographed stations of any corporate event. It suits leadership groups and the afternoon of a meeting day: sweat is moderate, a change of clothes is needed. Like its cousin archery it is skill-based, but unlike archery there is an opponent — for a team that wants competition but not football, that difference decides the choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is fencing not dangerous?

With mask, jacket, plastron and glove, contact is fully controlled; no blade is raised before the mask is on. Corporate workshops use blunt sport blades and electric scoring. It is the safest duelling format among the martial arts.

Is fitness or a sporting background needed?

No. What decides a bout is distance reading, timing and reflex, not strength or stamina. Older participants or those with no sporting background are not at a disadvantage, which is why it is often chosen for leadership groups.

Which weapon is used?

Foil or épée. Épée has the simplest rule (whole body is target, first touch wins) and is usually chosen for a single session. Sabre is not used in corporate sessions.

Can it be set up in a hotel?

Yes. A hotel ballroom or sports hall works with portable pistes and equipment; each piste needs a flat 14 by 2 metre area, which most congress hotels in Istanbul and Antalya can provide. Office meeting rooms rarely have that length; a fencing hall is the natural venue.

What about equipment and clothing?

Mask, jacket, glove, plastron and blade are supplied by us and sized per participant. Participants need trainers and long tracksuit trousers; shorts are not accepted. A change of clothes is needed and sweat is moderate — nothing to pack beyond that.

How many people and how long?

A single workshop runs 90–120 minutes and ends with a duel tournament. Six to eight people per instructor; up to 30 with several pistes and instructors. An everyone-against-everyone round of five-touch bouts completes on one piste for up to 12 people.
