About Bowling

Bowling is the corporate competition format with the highest attendance, and the reason is not the sport itself but everything around it: no change of clothes, no fitness, no weather, no age limit, food and drink alongside. A bowling tournament is the event that even employees who flinch at the words "sports event" come to. That is why it is usually our first suggestion for an HR team organising a company event for the first time — and one of the simplest activities for a visiting delegation's evening in Istanbul.

How the tournament is built

Teams of four to six per lane; department teams or deliberately mixed teams. Each team plays two or three games (one game is ten frames, 25–35 minutes with four to six people); the team score is calculated as a total or an average. Side awards — highest individual score, most strikes, "worst frame" — keep the competition entertaining for those who do not bowl well. A 100-person tournament finishes in three hours on a 20-lane venue; the live scoreboard shows on the venue screens. The tournament programme includes lanes, shoes, score management, a moderator in English and awards.

Department teams or mixed teams

They serve different purposes. Department teams strengthen belonging and produce friendly inter-department rivalry — "sales or accounting?" is answered in one evening. Mixed teams put people who do not know each other on the same lane and raise the event's introduction value. For newly merged teams, colleagues from different locations or countries, and dealer meetings, mixed; for established companies with clear departments, department teams. Mixed men's and women's teams are bowling's normal state.

Combining with dinner

Most bowling venues house a restaurant or bar, and that is the format's strongest side: the tournament flows into dinner, dinner into the awards; no venue change, nobody lost on the way. In a company dinner programme bowling comes before the meal; at a year-end party a tournament, dinner and a short dance block can be built under one roof. If alcohol is served it does not start before the tournament ends — that is to keep the scoreboard meaningful.

Who it is for

Everyone, and in bowling that is genuinely true: employees with limited mobility can play with a ramp, children join on a bumper lane at a family day, a 60-year-old can post the team's best score. No health declaration is needed, no rules need explaining across languages. The only point of attention is the wrist and shoulder: ball weight is chosen per person (8–10 lb for women and first-timers, 12–14 lb for experienced players) and the moderator sets this at the start.

When and where

Bowling has no season; between November and March, when outdoor events carry cancellation risk, it is the most requested format. Venues exist in every large city and in shopping centres; there is no transport problem. Venues fill early in December, so four to six weeks' notice is needed. An inter-company tournament is also possible: an evening with teams from six to ten companies in the same sector is a low-cost networking event.

Alternatives

Table tennis at the office, no budget; badminton for more movement; laser tag for higher energy and a younger mood. Of the four, bowling combines most naturally with dinner and has the widest age range.

Frequently asked questions

How many people?

20–150. Teams of four to six per lane; a 100-person tournament finishes in three hours at a 20-lane venue. Above 150, two venues or two sessions are needed.

Department teams or mixed teams?

Department teams for belonging and inter-department rivalry; mixed teams for introductions. For newly merged teams, colleagues from different locations or countries and dealer meetings, mixed; for established companies, department teams.

Can it combine with dinner?

That is its strongest side: most venues house a restaurant or bar, the tournament flows into dinner and the venue does not change. At a year-end party or a delegation's last evening, a tournament, dinner and a short dance block can be built under one roof. Alcohol does not start before the tournament ends.

What about employees who have never played or have limited mobility?

Bowling is for everyone: it can be played with a ramp, ball weight is chosen per person (8–10 lb for first-timers), side awards keep it entertaining for those who do not bowl well. No health declaration and no rules to explain.

Which months?

It has no season; between November and March, when outdoor events carry cancellation risk, it is the most requested format. Venues fill early in December, so four to six weeks' notice is needed.

Is an inter-company bowling tournament possible?

Yes. An evening with teams from six to ten companies in the same sector is a low-cost networking event. Fixtures, score management and awards come from us in the same way.
