About Fitness
Corporate fitness contains two separate decisions, and confusing them is the most common mistake: a one-off workshop, or a continuing benefit? A workshop is remembered for a day; a benefit settles into the payroll and into a habit every month. Their budgets, measurement and success criteria are different.
The formats that come to you
- HIIT workshop. Equipment-free interval training finishing in 30 to 40 minutes — the one fitness format that fits into a lunch break or between two meetings. It needs 2 m² per participant and a clock, which makes it the format to reach for when a group is in Turkey for meetings and has half an hour rather than half a day.
- Functional training. Not fitness but the specific problems desk work creates: forward-rolled shoulders, tight hip flexors, an immobile upper back. Low tempo, and largely possible in business clothing.
- In-office spin workshop. Bikes and an instructor come to the company; a short-term format for testing interest.
The workshop that translates across every site
Functional training is worth singling out for a regional programme, because a desk in Istanbul produces the same shoulders as a desk in Frankfurt or Dubai. It can be delivered identically at every location, in the same 45 minutes, with no local adaptation — and it is the one most likely to be repeated afterwards, because the closing section is a short set people can do at their own desk.
Order matters: movement first, intensity second
HIIT burns calories and raises fitness but does not correct posture — and in a stiff body, high-tempo movement can cause strain. Functional training is low tempo and focuses on movement quality. The two are complements rather than alternatives, and where both are planned, functional training comes first.
The benefit side: the unused membership
The most common mistake in corporate gym packages is paying for memberships nobody uses: an annual agreement is signed and three months later usage turns out to be low. Most benefits leads have made this mistake once and it is expensive in a way that is hard to explain upward.
Two measures reduce it. First, coach support in the first four weeks — an employee who walks into a gym alone and does not know what to do stops coming in the third week, and this support is the single variable that determines whether participation survives. Second, measure before committing: an office workshop removes travel, clothing and traffic from the decision, so the participation rate it produces is a genuine indicator of interest rather than a survey answer.
Group class or individual gym?
Gym training is individual and produces the highest drop-out rate of any corporate package. Group classes such as spin carry a different psychology: the class starts at a set time with a known capacity. An employee who struggles to go to a gym alone does not struggle to turn up to a class. Resistance is also set individually, so two people side by side work at completely different loads and the difference in level is invisible.
Data and privacy
The company receives aggregate usage only — how many people and the average number of visits. No individual usage data is shared, and personal health measurements stay between the employee and the coach. This framework is announced to employees in writing at the start. Where your group has a data protection standard the local benefit must meet, this is the paragraph to check it against; it is a deliberate design decision rather than an omission.
Frequently asked questions
Which programmes can be run at our office?
HIIT and functional training workshops run comfortably on site; 2 m² per participant, a level floor and a sound system are enough. A spin workshop can also be brought in with bikes. Gym and regular spin packages run at a facility. All of these also work in a hotel function room during a conference.
What about offices without showers?
A version needing no shower can be built by adjusting intensity and duration; functional training is low tempo and does not cause perspiration. For HIIT the session is planned for the end of the working day or run at moderate intensity.
What is the difference between HIIT and functional training?
HIIT burns calories and raises fitness; functional training targets the postural problems desk work creates and is low tempo. They are complements rather than alternatives, and where both are planned functional training comes first.
Is it suitable for colleagues with low fitness?
Yes, because intensity is personal. In HIIT a low-impact alternative is given for every movement; functional training is low tempo by design; in spin, resistance is set individually and differences in level are invisible from outside.
Is employees' gym usage data shared with the company?
No individual data is shared. Only aggregate usage is reported. Personal health measurements and programme details remain between the employee and the coach, and this framework is announced in writing at the start.
How should a benefit budget be planned?
Measuring interest with an office workshop before an annual commitment is the soundest route; the participation rate that emerges with no travel barrier is a genuine indicator. If usage stays low, usage-based or tiered models are more efficient, and that is decided with the first three months of data.
Why is coach support essential in the first four weeks?
Gym training is individual, and an employee who walks in alone without knowing what to do stops coming in the third week. That support teaches basic movement patterns and safe progression; it is the single variable determining whether participation survives.
Are remote workers covered?
Under a chain facility model they use branches in whichever city they are in. In cities without chain access, an online training platform or a home programme can be added — the point to specify at contract if your group has an equity standard across locations.
