About Canoeing
Canoeing is the entry point to corporate water sports: no waves, no current, no engine. A course paddled in two-person canoes on a still lake is the format in which even a participant on the water for the first time relaxes within half an hour. No swimming is required; buoyancy aids are mandatory, a safety boat follows the group, and the water where a canoe might tip starts at knee depth.
Why two-person canoes
A single kayak is an individual sport; a two-person canoe requires two people to paddle at the same time and in the same direction. The front sets the tempo, the back steers; if they disagree, the canoe goes in circles. It is the clearest feedback a team event could ask for: when communication breaks down the canoe leaves its line and everyone sees it. Pairs are deliberately built across departments — and, for a mixed international group, across offices — and swapped halfway through the course.
The half-day flow
- Briefing and equipment (20 min). Buoyancy aid, paddle grip, what to do if the canoe tips. On the shore and in shallow water, in English.
- Settling the technique (30 min). Straight stroke, turn, stop; free practice near the shore.
- Course and tasks (60–90 min). A buoyed route on the lake; team tasks at checkpoints (collecting flags, synchronised strokes, distance with the fewest strokes). Team points are collected.
- Return, refreshments and debrief (30 min). Refreshments on the shore; a short "what did we learn" session if wanted.
Where it happens
Lake Sapanca is 90 minutes from Istanbul and the nearest still water that allows a same-day return; for a team staying in the city it is a half-day trip with coach transfer included. For Ankara teams, Lake Mogan at Gölbaşı does the same job. Lake choice is driven by transfer time: a journey over 90 minutes turns a half-day event into a full day and changes the budget. For events that cannot travel to a lake — a trade fair, an indoor festival — the VR canoe station is an alternative that works with a real paddling motion.
Season and weather
May to October is the season window; water temperature is most comfortable from June to September, which matters for a group planning a visit around it. Wind affects a canoe directly: above 15 knots the event is postponed. The decision time (24 hours before), the decision criteria and the backup date are written into the contract; those three clauses remove the most common dispute in water sports. Rain alone is not a reason to cancel.
Canoe, rowing or SUP
All three can be done on the same lake and do different jobs. Canoeing is two-person communication and the lowest threshold; rowing (dragon boat) puts 10–20 people in one boat pulling in sync and suits a large team; SUP is individual balance with a slightly higher threshold. For 6–20 people canoeing, for 20–60 dragon boat, for teams wanting balance and an individual challenge SUP. A rotation combining two on the same day is also possible.
Safety and health
Buoyancy aids on everyone without exception; one safety boat per ten canoes; first aid on the shore. A health declaration is requested; pregnancy and serious back conditions need a doctor's approval. Sitting in a canoe loads the lower back — which is why courses beyond 60–90 minutes are not planned. Participants need clothes that can get wet, a change of clothes and sun protection; getting wet is part of the format and the invitation says so.
Frequently asked questions
Can non-swimmers take part?
Yes. Buoyancy aids are mandatory for everyone without exception, a safety boat follows the group, and the event starts on a still lake in shallow water near the shore. Swimming is not required; trust in the water is enough, and that builds in the first half hour.
What happens if a canoe tips?
It is practised in the briefing: the buoyancy aid keeps the person on the surface, the safety boat arrives within a minute or two, the canoe is emptied and re-boarded. Because it starts in shallow, still water the first attempt is a few metres from the shore. Getting wet is part of the format and the invitation says so.
Where is it done, and how far is the transfer?
Lake Sapanca (90 minutes from Istanbul), Lake Mogan (Ankara) and other lakes near the cities. A transfer over 90 minutes turns a half-day event into a full day; the lake is chosen accordingly and coach transfer from the hotel is in the quote.
Which months?
May to October. Water temperature is most comfortable from June to September. Above 15 knots of wind the event is postponed; decision time, criteria and backup date are written into the contract. Rain alone is not a reason to cancel.
Canoe or rowing?
For 6–20 people, two-person canoes (communication and the lowest threshold); for 20–60, dragon boat rowing (synchrony in one boat); for teams wanting balance and an individual challenge, SUP. A rotation combining two on the same day is possible.
How many people and how long?
6–60 people; one safety boat per ten canoes. Half a day (3–3.5 hours): briefing, technique, a 60–90 minute course, refreshments. Courses beyond 90 minutes are not planned because of lower-back load. Briefing and instruction are in English.
