About Wakeboard

Wakeboarding sits at the adrenaline end of corporate water sports — and the cable park (wakepark) system is what makes it possible as a company event. There is no boat; the participant is pulled by a cable system stretched between fixed towers on the lake. That removes the cost and capacity limit of hiring a boat: a park handles 30–40 starts an hour and everyone tries in turn.

How a cable park works

A two- or five-tower cable system on the lake pulls the participant at a fixed speed (usually 25–30 km/h, reduced for beginners). A two-tower system runs straight out and back and is ideal for beginners: start, straight run, release at the turn, repeat. A five-tower system (full-size cable) takes riders around the lake; the second step for those who can stand. Corporate groups start on two towers; in the first hour most participants ride on a kneeboard and half stand up on a wakeboard.

The kneeboard: where everyone starts

Standing up on a wakeboard is hard at the first attempt and most of the first ten starts end in the water. So the corporate programme starts on a kneeboard: the participant kneels on the board, holds the handle, the start is immediate and the "I am riding" feeling comes from the first run. Anyone comfortable on the kneeboard moves to the wakeboard; anyone who is not continues on the kneeboard. Either way everyone rides on top of the water — nobody goes home saying "it didn't work".

The half-day flow

  • Briefing (20 min). Buoyancy aid, helmet, handle grip, start position, what to do after a fall (let go, hold the board, swim to shore or wait for the rescue boat) — in English.
  • Kneeboard runs (60 min). Three to five starts each; the instructor on the start dock.
  • Wakeboard attempts (60 min). For those who want it; anyone standing can move to the five-tower system.
  • Free time and refreshments (30 min). At the park's shore facility.

Who it is for

Swimming is required — falls are into the water and you stay on the surface until the rescue boat arrives (the buoyancy aid helps, but water confidence is needed). Moderate-to-good fitness; arms and legs tire. It is the right format for young teams that want adrenaline and enjoy competition — a regional sales team on an incentive trip, for example; for wide-age teams hesitant about water, canoeing or a pedal boat is recommended. For large groups a two-station design (wakeboard plus SUP or canoe) lets everyone find a water experience that suits them.

Where and when

Cable parks in Turkey are few and close to the large cities: around Istanbul, in Antalya and on the Aegean coast. Season May to September; water is comfortable from June to September, and in the cooler months a wetsuit (provided by the park) is used. Wind is less of a problem at a cable park than with a boat because the cable is fixed; storms and lightning are cancellation criteria. Capacity: a park's start dock handles 30–40 starts an hour; half a day is enough for a group of 40. Transfer from the hotel is in the quote.

Safety

Buoyancy aid and helmet without exception; the park operator controls the cable speed and stops the system on a fall; a rescue boat or shore team stands ready. A health declaration is requested; for anyone with shoulder, knee or back conditions not even the kneeboard is recommended — the pull of the cable loads the shoulders and arms. No participation in pregnancy. Alcohol before the session is prohibited.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a boat?

No; in a cable park the participant is pulled by a cable stretched between fixed towers on the lake. That removes the cost and capacity limit of a boat: 30–40 starts an hour, everyone tries in turn.

Do people stand up at the first attempt?

On a wakeboard mostly not; that is why the programme starts on a kneeboard, where the start is immediate and you ride from the first run. Anyone comfortable moves to the wakeboard, anyone who is not continues on the kneeboard; everyone rides on top of the water.

Is swimming required?

Yes. Falls are into the water and you stay on the surface until the rescue boat arrives; the buoyancy aid helps but water confidence is needed. For non-swimmers a canoe or pedal-boat station is set up on the same lake.

Which teams does it suit?

Young teams that want adrenaline and enjoy competition — an incentive group, for example. Fitness should be moderate to good; arms and legs tire. For wide-age teams hesitant about water, canoeing or a pedal boat is the better choice.

Where, and which months?

Cable parks are few and close to the large cities: around Istanbul, in Antalya and on the Aegean coast, with transfer from the hotel in the quote. Season May to September; in cooler months the park provides wetsuits. Storms and lightning are cancellation criteria; wind matters less than with a boat because the cable is fixed.

Health restrictions and safety?

Buoyancy aid and helmet without exception; the operator stops the system on a fall and a rescue boat stands ready. For anyone with shoulder, knee or back conditions not even the kneeboard is recommended — the cable loads shoulders and arms. No participation in pregnancy. A health declaration is requested.
