About CrossFit

CrossFit is one of the few corporate formats on this site that is not "for everyone", and that needs saying at the top of the page. It is designed for fit teams that train regularly and want competition; it is not recommended for a team with a wide age and fitness range. When the profile is right, though, it gives something no other format does: a scored, indisputable team result reached in 45 minutes of exhaustion.

What a team WOD is

A WOD (workout of the day) is a set of movements done for a set number of repetitions against the clock. In the team version, teams of three or four share the total work: one swings a kettlebell while another rows and the third rests, then they rotate. The team's total time or total repetitions is the score. In a corporate event this is a single 45–60 minute block: warm-up and movement teaching (20 min), team WOD (20–25 min), cool-down and scores (10 min).

Scaling: how fitness differences are managed

The concept that makes corporate CrossFit possible is scaling: the weight and difficulty of every movement is reduced per person. An empty bar instead of a loaded one, a kettlebell instead of a bar, knee push-ups instead of push-ups. The coach sees each participant's level during the warm-up and sets their load for the WOD. That is how people of different fitness can work in the same team — but there is a floor: for someone who does no sport at all, CrossFit is not the right first step; the corporate fitness programme is their starting point.

Where it is used

  • Sales and field teams. Teams with a competitive culture that work to targets; a kick-off or quarter-close event.
  • Technical and engineering teams. Groups that want a measurable result and clear rules.
  • Teams that already train. As an internal "fitness challenge" or an inter-department CrossFit competition.
  • Visiting teams that train. A regional sales team in Istanbul for a kick-off, already used to a gym, wanting something harder than a walk — a box session with transfers from the hotel is a strong fit, and the coach runs it in English.

Venue and equipment

A box (CrossFit gym) is the natural venue: barbells, kettlebells, rowers, ropes and bars are in place. A bodyweight-and-kettlebell WOD can be set up in an office or hotel garden with portable equipment; barbell movements are then left out of the programme. Participants need sports clothing and trainers; a shower is needed. That rules the format out of pre-dinner or between-meeting use — it is for an event day or after work.

Safety

In CrossFit the source of injury is technique, not load; so the corporate WOD contains no technical heavy lifts (snatch, clean and jerk). A maximum of ten people work per coach. A health declaration is mandatory; the movement set is changed for anyone with heart, back or shoulder conditions. The warm-up is never skipped. Sweat is high; water and shade planning are mandatory in summer. Competition is natural, but the coach stops any speed that breaks technique — the score counts only with technique.

Frequently asked questions

Is CrossFit suitable for everyone?

No, and we say so openly. It is for fit teams that train regularly and want competition. It is not recommended for teams with a wide age and fitness range; for them the corporate fitness programme is the starting point.

How are fitness differences managed within a team?

By scaling: the weight and difficulty of every movement is reduced per person (empty bar, kettlebell, knee push-ups). The coach sees each level in the warm-up and sets the load. Because the team WOD shares the work, different levels can work in the same team.

Are heavy barbell lifts involved?

Technical heavy lifts (snatch, clean and jerk) are not part of the corporate WOD. The source of injury is technique, not load; the movement set is chosen accordingly and a maximum of ten people work per coach.

Where is it done?

A box (CrossFit gym) is the natural venue, with transfers from the hotel for a visiting group. A bodyweight-and-kettlebell WOD can be set up in an office or hotel garden with portable equipment; barbell movements are then left out. A shower is needed; it is for an event day or after work.

Which teams does it suit best?

Sales and field teams with a competitive culture (kick-off, quarter close), technical teams that want a measurable result, teams that already train (inter-department fitness challenge) and visiting teams used to a gym.

How many people, and how long?

8–50 people; a maximum of ten per coach, teams of three or four. A single block is 45–60 minutes: 20 minutes warm-up and movement teaching, 20–25 minutes team WOD, 10 minutes cool-down and scores. The coach runs it in English.
