Inter-Department Tournaments

A tournament built for teams whose departments do not know each other.

An inter-department tournament is the one sports format that targets the silo problem directly. Built correctly it creates lasting familiarity between units; built badly it reinforces the existing divide. The difference lies in the team-formation and sport-balancing rules.

When does a department tournament backfire?

The hidden risk is this: each department forms its own team and the tournament reinforces the existing split. If the competition is not designed well, the distance between units does not shrink — it grows.

There are two ways to prevent it: multi-sport scoring (every unit is good at something, nobody loses outright), or a mixed-team rule for part of the tournament — at least two different departments per side. Using both together gives the best result.

What the organisation includes

01 Inclusion

Unit team design

Departments are not equal in size; small units are merged or a reinforcement rule is defined.

02 Inclusion

Multi-sport scoring

An overall table across three or four sports, so one unit dominating a single sport cannot end the tournament early.

03 Inclusion

A mixed-team round

At least two different departments per side in part of the tournament — the most direct way to break silos.

04 Inclusion

An inclusive set of sports

Skill-based sports (darts, archery, boules, table tennis) remove fitness and age advantages.

05 Inclusion

Fixtures and time management

Single-day or spread over weeks; match lengths, venue capacity and breaks calculated together.

06 Inclusion

Standings and internal comms

A live table, unit rankings and ready-made visuals for internal communication.

07 Inclusion

Roles for non-players

Scoring, hosting, organising and photography roles; they widen participation markedly.

08 Inclusion

Awards and closing

A unit trophy, individual awards and a fair play award; the closing turns rivalry into something positive.

Sports that suit a department tournament

In mixed-fitness units, skill-based sports draw higher participation than physical ones. The best result comes from combining both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a department tournament increase division?
If built badly, yes. A tournament where each department forms its own team in a single sport can widen the existing distance. Two mechanisms prevent it: multi-sport scoring (every unit is good at something) and a mixed-team rule for part of the tournament (at least two different departments per side).
What if departments are different sizes?
Small units are merged or a reinforcement rule is defined: units below a certain headcount may take players from another unit. The rule set must be shared in writing before the tournament; a rule added afterwards is perceived as partial.
Which sports should be chosen?
In mixed-fitness units, skill-based sports draw higher participation: darts, archery, boules, table tennis — no strength or fitness advantage, and a 25-year-old competes with a 60-year-old on equal terms. The best result combines these with physical sports such as five-a-side or volleyball.
What about employees who do not want to play?
Scoring, hosting, organising and photography roles are planned. These roles widen the number of employees involved markedly and keep people with physical limitations from being left out.
Single day or spread over weeks?
A single day finishes in 4-6 hours with a short organisational load. A format spread over weeks (6-12 weeks, one match a week) creates a rivalry discussed in the office for weeks; where breaking departmental silos is the goal, it is markedly more effective.
Does it suit a post-merger or restructure?
Yes, but timing matters. The first two weeks are an observation period; the first real tournament belongs in weeks 3-6 and must use mixed teams. If you leave team selection to participants, everyone teams up with people they know and the event reinforces the split.
