Overview

Short answer: Our Istanbul Sailing Experience is a half-day, full-day or sunset programme in which your group boards sailing yachts at a marina on the Anatolian or European side and sails the open water of the Sea of Marmara and the southern entrance of the Bosphorus with an instructor on every boat. Nobody needs prior sailing experience, groups can range from 4 to 150 people, and we shape the format, route and transfers around your team — from a relaxed sail with lunch to a sunset sail with dinner or a friendly mini sailing skills race.

Why choose sailing in Istanbul?

Most corporate sailing in Turkey (Türkiye) happens on holiday coasts — the steady afternoon breeze of Çeşme or the sheltered bays of Bodrum. Sailing in Istanbul is a different proposition: the boat moves through the middle of one of the world’s great cities. On one side you have the Maiden’s Tower and Seraglio Point, on the other the Moda headland and the long Anatolian shoreline; a little further north come the bridges, the waterside mansions and the walls of Rumeli Fortress. Your team can leave a meeting room and be on the water within the hour, then be back in the city for the evening.

That convenience is why a Bosphorus sailing experience works so well for international companies with offices in Istanbul, for regional teams flying in for a leadership meeting, and for incentive and MICE planners who want one memorable afternoon without moving the whole group to the coast. There is no overnight stay to organise and no domestic flight to book; the yachts come to the city, in effect, rather than the city to the yachts.

It is also an honest kind of team activity. On a sailing yacht there are no spectators. Someone has to steer, someone has to trim the headsail, someone has to watch for other traffic and call the turn, and if the coordination is poor the boat tells you within seconds. Your instructor runs the boat and keeps everyone safe; your team does the work under their guidance and rotates through the roles.

How sailing in Istanbul actually works

The Bosphorus is one of the busiest waterways in the world, with merchant ships, commuter ferries and strong surface currents flowing from the Black Sea towards the Marmara. We do not pretend otherwise. In practice, most of the sailing on an Istanbul programme takes place on the Marmara side and at the southern mouth of the strait, where there is room to tack, gybe and practise manoeuvres. The run north towards the bridges is added as an extension when the wind, current and traffic allow, and the decision is made on the water by the instructor. When conditions call for it, the engine is used for that stretch.

We say this at the start because it is the difference between a good day and a disappointing one. A team that expects to sail under the bridges and back regardless of the weather will feel short-changed; a team that knows the plan, and sees the bridges as a bonus when the day allows it, almost always comes back happy.

Routes: Marmara, the Bosphorus entrance and the bridges

From the Anatolian side: Moda and Fenerbahçe

Leaving from a marina on the Anatolian side, the yachts reach open water quickly. The stretch off Moda and Fenerbahçe is a comfortable area for first manoeuvres on a steady breeze, with enough space for each boat to work through the helm and line-handling roles without crowding. For groups staying on the Anatolian side, or arriving at Sabiha Gökçen Airport, this is usually the shortest transfer.

From the European side: the Marmara shore and the Old City skyline

From a marina on the European Marmara shore, the yachts sail towards the skyline of the historic peninsula. Seeing the domes and minarets of Sultanahmet rise from the water is, for most visitors, the moment of the day that ends up on everyone’s phone. This side generally suits groups staying in European-side hotels or arriving at Istanbul Airport.

Bosphorus sailing towards Rumeli Fortress

When the day allows, the yachts enter the Bosphorus and head north past the palaces and waterside mansions on both shores, Ortaköy and the first bridge, as far as Rumeli Fortress. This is the classic picture of a Bosphorus sailing experience: Europe on your left, Asia on your right, and the city stacked up the hills on either side. On this stretch the route is managed moment by moment because of the current and the traffic, so we treat it as an extension rather than a promise.

Not an official regatta: the mini sailing skills race is a short, instructor-led course on which teams are scored on manoeuvres, sail trim and teamwork, and it finishes with a light-hearted awards ceremony. For a day with no competition at all, the sailing experience and dinner format or a relaxed sail is a better fit. If your team genuinely wants to learn to sail, our corporate sailing training page describes the syllabus in detail.

A sailing tour of Istanbul for groups: a typical full day

A full day usually begins with a hotel pick-up mid-morning, timed to avoid the worst of the city traffic. At the marina, the group is welcomed, split across the yachts and given a safety briefing on board: life jackets, how to move around the deck, what to do when the boat heels and how the instructor will call the manoeuvres. The first hour is spent getting comfortable — taking turns at the helm, learning how to sheet in the headsail and how the boat responds.

Lunch is served at anchor in a sheltered spot, which gives everyone time to talk, swim if the season and water allow, and swap stories between boats. In the afternoon, if the breeze, current and traffic are right, the yachts head into the Bosphorus towards the bridges; if not, the afternoon becomes a second, more confident sailing session on the Marmara side, where the teams who struggled in the morning usually find their rhythm. The day ends back at the marina in the late afternoon, with transfers to the hotel or straight on to dinner.

Planners who want to add a competitive element often place a short mini sailing skills race in the afternoon slot, with scores read out over dinner. Others prefer to keep the day entirely relaxed. Both work; it simply depends on what you want the group to take home.

Sunset sailing and dinner

For many groups the most memorable version is the evening one. The yachts leave in the late afternoon, sail along the Marmara shore as the light softens, and position themselves so that the sun sets behind the Old City skyline. After about two and a half hours on the water, the group comes ashore for dinner at a waterfront restaurant, where photos from the boats can be shown on screen. It is a natural closing event for a conference or a leadership meeting, and it fits neatly into a working day.

Season, wind and weather

The main sailing season in Istanbul runs from April to October. May, June and September are usually the most balanced months: mild temperatures, good light and fewer leisure boats than at the height of summer. In July and August we recommend morning or late-afternoon sailing to avoid the midday heat.

Two winds shape sailing in Istanbul. The poyraz, a north-easterly, is common in summer and generally gives good sailing conditions. The lodos, a south-westerly, can build up a choppy sea on the Marmara side and is the main reason a route is shortened or a date moved. The final decision is made on the morning of the sail, at a decision time agreed in advance, and always by the instructor rather than by the timetable. If conditions are not suitable, the route moves to more sheltered water or the programme shifts to a reserve date — a scenario we set out in writing in the quote, so nobody is surprised.

Safety on board

  • An instructor on every boat, who runs the manoeuvres and guides participants through the helm and line-handling roles.
  • Life jackets in suitable sizes for everyone and a safety briefing on board before departure.
  • A fixed decision time and a reserve date, with weather calls made by the instructor.
  • On the Bosphorus stretch, the route is adjusted continuously for traffic and current.
  • No swimming or sailing experience is required; going into the water is always optional.

Getting to the marina from the airports and hotels

For groups flying in, transfers are often the most important part of the plan. If your group lands at Istanbul Airport and stays on the European side, a marina on the European Marmara shore is usually the better choice; if you land at Sabiha Gökçen or stay on the Anatolian side, we generally recommend a marina on the Anatolian side. We plan hotel–marina–restaurant transfers around group size and schedule departure times to avoid peak traffic, which in Istanbul can matter more than distance. Briefings, guidance and all communication on the day are in English.

For teams coming to Turkey from abroad, we can also handle accommodation, airport meet-and-greet and the rest of the programme: see corporate sports events in Turkey for international teams and our Istanbul incentive programmes.

Other ways to sail in Istanbul

For a full day at sea with a swim stop in a bay, the Princes’ Islands sailing experience is the natural alternative. To combine a morning in the historic peninsula with an afternoon on the water, see our Golden Horn sailing experience. Rowing, yoga on deck and waterfront runs are covered on our Bosphorus corporate sports events page, and to compare Istanbul with Çeşme and Bodrum across every format, start with our corporate sailing hub.

Frequently asked questions

Do we really sail up the Bosphorus and under the bridges?

Most of the sailing takes place on the Marmara side and at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus. The run north towards the bridges and Rumeli Fortress is added when wind, current and traffic allow, at the instructor’s discretion, and the engine is used on that stretch when needed.

Can people with no sailing experience take part?

Yes. There is an instructor on every boat who runs the yacht. Participants take turns at the helm and on the lines under their guidance, and anyone who prefers can simply enjoy the sail.

What is the minimum and maximum group size?

We plan for groups of 4 to 150. Each yacht usually carries 6–10 participants; a team of four can sail on a single boat, while larger groups sail together across several yachts.

What happens if the weather is bad?

On the morning of the sail, at a decision time agreed in advance, the instructor assesses the conditions. If necessary the route is moved to more sheltered water or the programme moves to a reserve date; this is set out in writing in the quote.

How do we get from the airport to the marina?

For groups landing at Istanbul Airport and staying on the European side we suggest a marina on the European shore; for groups landing at Sabiha Gökçen or staying on the Anatolian side, a marina on the Anatolian side. Hotel–marina transfers are planned around group size.

Can the programme run in English, and is there a competitive option?

Yes, briefings and all guidance can be in English. For teams who want competition we run an instructor-led mini sailing skills race on a short course — a friendly game with scoring and an awards ceremony rather than an official race.
