Overview

Short answer: The Bodrum Rowing Experience is an instructor-led team rowing session for companies in the clear, sheltered bays of the Bodrum peninsula, using sea kayaks, dragon boats or multi-seat rowing boats depending on your group. Where the shoreline and the hotel allow it, the session can start directly from your hotel beach. Because Bodrum summers are hot and the wind tends to build in the afternoon, we schedule sessions early in the morning. No experience is needed, everyone wears a life jacket, the course stays close to the shore and the morning ends with a friendly mini team race. Suitable for groups of 8–120 people; the boat format is confirmed in your quote.

Why Bodrum is special for sea rowing

What makes Bodrum stand out is the water itself. The peninsula’s jagged coastline creates dozens of small bays, many of them sheltered from the prevailing wind. In these bays the sea is typically clear enough to see the seabed in the shallows, shading from turquoise near the beach to deep blue further out. For a crew paddling together for the first time, that combination of shelter, clarity and a shoreline that is never far away builds confidence quickly — and the views reward every stroke.

Bodrum is also one of the most popular incentive and retreat destinations in Turkey (Türkiye). Corporate groups usually stay at a single resort or hotel, where meetings, meals and evening events all take place. Rowing fits neatly into that rhythm. There is no need for a separate travel day: after breakfast, the group walks down to the beach, spends a couple of hours on the water and is back for lunch and the afternoon agenda.

Hotel beach or a dedicated bay?

There are two main ways to set up a Bodrum rowing morning.

From your hotel beach. If your hotel sits on a suitable stretch of sheltered shoreline and the hotel management agrees, we bring the boats to the beach, run the briefing on the sand and launch straight from the water in front of the hotel. Nobody needs a transfer; participants walk from their rooms to the start in a few minutes. This is the most convenient format for resort-based incentive groups and conferences.

From a dedicated bay. If the hotel’s shoreline is too exposed, too busy or simply not suitable, or if your group wants to get away from the resort for a few hours, we transfer the team to a calmer or more scenic bay elsewhere on the peninsula. This option often feels more like an excursion, and it can be combined with lunch by the water.

We check which of these is realistic during the quote stage, based on your hotel’s location and shoreline.

Heat, wind and timing

Bodrum in high summer is hot, and the afternoon often brings the meltem, the seasonal northerly wind of the Aegean, which can chop up the water in more exposed bays. For both reasons, we run rowing sessions early in the morning, before the sun climbs. Early starts mean cooler air, flatter water, an empty beach and a programme that is finished before lunch. Outside June to August the timing can be more flexible, and spring and autumn are genuinely lovely seasons for rowing in Bodrum — warm water, softer sunshine and fewer crowds.

Sea kayak, dragon boat or rowing boat?

The right boat depends on the size of your group, the bay and what you want the session to feel like. We confirm the format in your quote.

  • Sea kayaks and sea canoes are the most common choice in Bodrum’s bays. Paddled in pairs, they put the rhythm between two people front and centre, and they are easy to manoeuvre around a cove. They suit small and mid-sized groups and leadership teams.
  • Dragon boats are the best option for larger groups. A long, stable boat with a drummer at the front setting the beat, a dragon boat turns a big group into one crew in minutes. With several boats, crews can race each other.
  • Multi-seat rowing boats are an option in bays where the water is especially calm, for groups who want a more classic rowing feel.

Teamwork: harmony over horsepower

In a two-person kayak, if one paddler speeds up the boat veers off course. In a dragon boat, if a few people lose the beat the whole boat feels heavier. Rowing shows a team, physically rather than verbally, that coordination matters more than strength. Throughout the session our instructors pass the job of setting the pace from person to person, and teams often discover that the best rhythm comes from whoever listens best, not whoever talks most. It is a simple insight, but after a morning in the bay it tends to stick.

How we keep it safe

Life jackets are mandatory for everyone. We ask about swimming ability in advance and place people in boats accordingly; non-swimmers can join comfortably in stable boats such as dragon boats. A briefing is given before anyone goes on the water, instructors stay with the crews throughout, and the course is always laid out close to the shore in sheltered water. We monitor the wind and sea forecast in the days before the event. If conditions are not right at the decision time written into your quote, we shorten the course, move to a more sheltered bay or switch to the back-up date agreed at booking.

Combining rowing with sailing or a treasure hunt in Bodrum

A rowing morning pairs naturally with the rest of a Bodrum programme. When the afternoon wind arrives, teams can head out on our Bodrum corporate sailing experience, putting that same breeze to good use. Alternatively, once the heat eases in the late afternoon, the group can switch to our Bodrum treasure hunt — a team game of clues and checkpoints around the marina, the castle surroundings and the old town streets. Treasure hunting on land after rowing on the water gives the day a satisfying balance.

If you are planning events elsewhere on the coast, see the Izmir Rowing Experience further north on the Aegean or the Antalya Rowing Experience on the Mediterranean.

Planning a Bodrum trip from abroad

Most international groups fly into Milas-Bodrum Airport, and we can organise transfers from the airport to your hotel and from the hotel to the water if the session takes place in a different bay. Briefings and instruction are available in English, and we coordinate directly with your hotel on beach access, timing and refreshments. If Bodrum is the base for a full incentive trip, our incentive travel programmes can cover accommodation, meetings, dinners and evening events as well.

Who is the Bodrum Rowing Experience for?

  • Groups of 8–120 people, with no rowing or kayaking experience required
  • Resort-based incentive groups and conferences looking for an easy, on-site activity
  • Leadership teams who want a quieter morning in a secluded bay
  • International teams who want to enjoy the Aegean actively rather than from a sunbed

What shapes the quote

We do not publish fixed prices, because each Bodrum session is planned around your group, hotel and dates. The main factors are:

  • Number of participants, boat type and number of boats
  • Hotel beach start or a dedicated bay with transfers
  • Session length and whether a mini team race is included
  • Add-ons such as sailing, a treasure hunt or lunch by the water
  • Transfers and briefing language

Send these details through our corporate quote form and we will reply with an itemised proposal, including the recommended setting, decision time and back-up date.

Frequently asked questions

Can the session start from our hotel beach?

Yes, if the hotel’s shoreline is sheltered and suitable and the hotel management agrees; we bring the boats to the beach and brief on the sand. Otherwise we transfer the group to a calmer bay nearby. We confirm this during the quote stage.

Why do sessions start so early?

Bodrum summers are hot and the afternoon meltem wind can chop up some bays. Early mornings are cooler, flatter and quieter, and the session is finished before lunch.

Sea kayak or dragon boat?

Sea kayaks suit small and mid-sized groups, dragon boats suit larger ones, and multi-seat rowing boats are possible in especially calm bays. The format is confirmed in your quote.

Can complete beginners and non-swimmers take part?

Yes. No experience is needed and everyone wears a life jacket. We ask about swimming ability in advance and seat non-swimmers in stable boats such as dragon boats.

When is the season for rowing in Bodrum?

The standard water sports season runs from April to October. In summer we start early in the morning; in spring and autumn timings are more flexible and conditions are very pleasant.

What can rowing be combined with in Bodrum?

Popular pairings are our Bodrum corporate sailing experience in the afternoon or a Bodrum treasure hunt in the late afternoon. Lunch and transfers can also be added.
