Overview

Short answer: A festival archery zone is a ready-made station made up of a shooting line, a waiting area, a barriered safety zone and a clear space or arrow-stop netting behind the targets, where coaches run taster sessions throughout the day. We bring the set-up, equipment, coaches, registration and queue system; you simply show us the space. It scales with the number of lanes and is planned for festivals with 50 to 1,000 participants a day. If space is tight or the event is indoors, a VR archery stand can take the place of the same station.

Why does archery suit a festival?

Archery is one of the few activities at a festival that draws in both the person shooting and everyone watching. It needs no particular fitness or strength, the first arrow is loosed after a few minutes of briefing, and the sound of an arrow hitting the target pulls the queue into the game too. That is why it works as a leveller at company festivals, family days, university fairs and municipal open-air events, regardless of age, gender or fitness. The tradition of flight archery known from the Ottoman okmeydanı ranges also gives the station a natural story at local festivals; if you like, a short demonstration with a traditional Turkish bow can be added to the programme.

This page is for organisations running their own festival who want to add a safe, professionally managed archery station: HR teams planning a company festival or company picnic, municipalities and public bodies, shopping centre and brand events, and university festival committees. If you would rather hand the whole festival over to us, our sports festival organisation service makes archery part of a single plan alongside the other stations.

Site plan: how is the archery station laid out?

The archery zone is made up of four areas, always placed in the same order and facing one way. During a site visit, or from a site plan you share, we measure the space and point the shooting direction away from where crowds pass.

1. Waiting and registration area

This is the area behind the shooting line where participants wait their turn and receive a short safety briefing. The registration desk, queue numbers and information board sit here. People waiting can watch the shooting comfortably but cannot reach the line.

2. Shooting line

Each lane has a marked shooting point on the ground. Lanes are separated by barriers or tape, and every archer shoots from the same line in the same direction. The distance between the shooting line and the target is planned within 10–18 metres for adults, with targets moved closer for children and beginner groups.

3. Barriered safety zone

The area between the shooting line and the targets, and both sides, are closed off with barriers. Nobody enters this zone except to collect arrows, on the coach’s command, once all shooting has stopped. Directional signs stop festival crowds taking a short cut in front of the station.

4. Clear space and arrow-stop netting behind the targets

A clear safety space is left behind the targets; where the site does not allow for this, arrow-stop netting is put up behind them. We do not set up the station where a footpath, car park entrance or stage lies behind the targets, and we change the shooting direction if necessary. The depth of the safety area behind the targets is decided during the site visit, based on the layout. If site preparation is to be handled together with the festival’s other stations, it can be planned as a whole under our sports area and course set-up service.

Capacity and flow by number of lanes

At a festival, the real question is “how many people can have a go?” The number of lanes decides this. The figures below are a planning assumption, not a firm commitment: each participant shoots 6 arrows in two ends; one round (short instruction, shooting, arrow collection and changeover) takes around 6 minutes; and there is one archer per lane at a time. On that basis, each lane handles about 10 people an hour. At busy times we switch to a 3-arrow quick taster, which brings the round down to about 4 minutes and raises each lane to about 15 people an hour. Daily totals are based on 6 effective shooting hours; lunch breaks, wind pauses and staff changeovers fall outside that time.

Number of lanesHourly capacity (standard 6-arrow taster)Hourly capacity (quick 3-arrow taster)Daily participants (6 effective hours, standard)Suitable event
4 lanes~40 people~60 people~240 peopleCompany family day, small picnic
8 lanes~80 people~120 people~480 peopleCompany festival, university fair
12 lanes~120 people~180 people~720 peopleMunicipal festival, shopping centre weekend event
16 lanes~160 people~240 people~960 peopleLarge public event, multi-day festival

That is why we quote capacity as 50 to 1,000 participants a day: the lower end is a single family day, the upper end a full-day festival with 16 lanes. Each group of lanes has a coach, and a line marshal responsible for the whole shooting line gives the “start shooting” and “stop shooting” commands.

Age groups and safety for children

The most sensitive part of festival archery is mixed age groups. Children use light, low draw-weight bows and closer targets; for the youngest participants we can set up a soft archery corner played with foam-tipped arrows. A coach always stands next to child archers, while parents stay in the waiting area. Every archer wears an arm guard, and arrows are collected only on the coach’s command. At events where alcohol is served, anyone who has been drinking is not allowed on the shooting line. Adults first get a feel for accuracy with a modern bow; those who want to can then try the traditional Turkish bow if the queue allows.

Registration and queue management

What controls the crowd at a festival station is not the equipment but the queue system. At the registration desk each participant receives a queue number or a time-slot card, so instead of standing in line they can visit other stations and come back on time. At corporate events, registration can be opened in advance from the guest list; at municipal and shopping centre events we register people on the spot and obtain parental consent for children. A board in the waiting area shows the safety rules and the shooting order. Short ends keep waiting times under control.

If space is limited or the event is indoors: the VR archery stand

Not every festival site suits a safe shooting line: shopping centre walkways, foyers, narrow courtyards and days with a risk of rain all make real arrows difficult. In these cases a VR archery stand offers the same experience without needing a safety zone. At some festivals, real archery outdoors and a VR stand indoors are set up together, giving flexibility if the weather changes.

Axe throwing and other add-on stations

An axe throwing station can be set up next to the archery station using the same one-way shooting and barrier logic. The two stations share the same safety team and waiting area, and become the festival’s “bravery corner” for adult participants. If you see archery as part of a wider mix of stations, have a look at the other options on our experience stations page.

Weather and wind plan

Archery is sensitive to wind. In a light breeze shooting continues, and coaches help each participant adjust their aiming point. When the wind picks up or starts gusting, the target distance is shortened first, and shooting is paused if necessary. In rain a canopy goes up over the shooting line and the targets and bows are protected; in thunder, lightning or storms the station is stopped completely. In summer heat, shade and a water point are added to the waiting area. This plan is shared in writing before the festival, so your organising team knows what will happen in each situation.

End-of-day mini contest

Throughout the day, each participant’s score is recorded on their registration card. In the festival’s final hour, the highest scorers, for example in separate adult and children’s categories, are invited to a short final. Finalists shoot a few arrows, the results are announced and prizes are handed out on stage. The mini contest keeps the station busy right to the end of the day and gives the festival a natural closing moment.

Notes for municipal and public festivals

At municipal and public sector events the station is usually set up in a square, park or around a stadium. Allocating the site and obtaining permits for public spaces is the organisation’s responsibility; we prepare the layout plan, safety zone and staff list for the permit process. For the general framework of public events, see our municipal and public sports events page. If you are thinking of archery as a separate team activity for your company rather than as part of a festival, a corporate archery experience is a better place to start.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does an archery zone need?

The shooting line to target distance is planned at 10–18 metres for adults, plus a waiting and registration area behind the line and a clear safety space or arrow-stop netting behind the targets. Width depends on the number of lanes. We confirm exact dimensions during a site visit or from your site plan.

How many people can shoot in a day?

Our planning assumption is about 10 people per lane per hour with a 6-arrow taster. That gives roughly 240 participants a day with 4 lanes and about 960 with 16 lanes. At busy times a quick 3-arrow taster raises hourly capacity.

Can children take part?

Yes. Children shoot with light, low draw-weight bows at closer targets, with a coach beside them. For the youngest we can set up a soft archery corner with foam-tipped arrows. At municipal and shopping centre events we ask for parental consent.

What happens if it is windy or raining?

Shooting continues in a light breeze; if the wind strengthens the target distance is shortened, with a pause if needed. In rain a canopy goes up over the shooting line, and in lightning or storms the station is stopped. Where there is indoor space, a VR archery stand can serve as the backup plan.

Can an archery zone be set up in a shopping centre or indoor hall?

In an indoor hall, real archery is possible if a safe shooting line and clear space behind the targets can be provided. For shopping centre walkways, foyers or narrow spaces we recommend the VR archery stand, which needs no safety zone.

What determines the price?

The quote is shaped by daily participant numbers, festival length, number of lanes and targets, venue, city and travel, equipment scope (axe throwing, children’s corner, traditional bow demonstration) and registration and prize preferences. We prepare an itemised quote.
