Corporate Handball Tournament
An indoor handball tournament: an equal starting point for colleagues who do not play football or basketball, and a team sport learned fast.
An indoor handball tournament: an equal starting point for colleagues who do not play football or basketball, and a team sport learned fast.
Handball is rarely chosen for corporate tournaments and is valuable for exactly that reason: very few participants have any previous experience, which starts everyone from the same line. In a football tournament the players with a licensed background separate themselves immediately; in handball every team is at the same level in the first match.
The basic logic of the game is intuitive: the ball is played with the hands, three steps are allowed, the ball can be bounced, and the goal area cannot be entered. Those four rules are explained in ten minutes and play begins. Passing and movement patterns familiar from basketball combine with the goal-and-defence logic of football; most participants have understood the game by the middle of their first match.
This matters more for an international group than for a local one. Football and basketball import a hierarchy from everybody's childhood, and which country someone grew up in largely decides where they sit in it. Handball is genuinely unfamiliar to most of Europe outside a handful of countries and to most of the MENA region, so a tournament in it starts closer to level than anything else on this list. If previous events have been dominated by the same few people, this is the corrective.
It is a good alternative for companies where the same employees always dominate the football and basketball tournaments and the rest stop taking part. Equality of experience widens the participant pool.

Almost every participant is in that position, and it is not a disadvantage but the sport's greatest strength in a corporate setting. A 20-minute rules and technique session is given on the morning of the tournament; the game is learned in the first match.
Standard basketball and volleyball halls are suitable for handball; only goals need to be installed. That makes finding a hall easier. Goals and floor marking are provided as part of the organisation.
Handball is a contact sport played at high pace; shoulder strains from throwing and knee and ankle strains from sudden turns can occur. In corporate tournaments match lengths are shortened, warm-up is mandatory and contact rules are enforced strictly by the referee.
Yes. Because it involves contact, we recommend stricter enforcement of the contact rules and shorter matches in mixed formats. A separate women's category can also be opened.
An eight-team group-plus-knockout format completes in one day in a single hall. Because matches are short, up to ten teams is possible.
