A preparation camp guide for teams and federations heading to the Istanbul 2027 European Games: when to arrive, how to choose hotels and training venues, acclimatisation, nutrition and a logistics checklist.
In short: for teams preparing for the Istanbul 2027 European Games (16–27 June 2027), a preparation camp has three goals: adapting to June heat and humidity, getting used to the city and travel times, and maintaining training rhythm before competition. For most sports, arriving 7–14 days before the Games is enough; choosing a hotel close to the training venue and optioning your room block early are the two decisions that make or break the camp.
Official accommodation for accredited athletes during the Games is arranged by the organising committee and the National Olympic Committees. This guide covers the preparation camp before that official period, and the needs of staff outside official accommodation (extra coaches, physios, families, sponsors).
When to arrive
| Camp length | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 3–6 days | Athletes from nearby countries, used to warm climates | Focus on transport and venue familiarisation |
| 7–14 days | Most sports and delegations | The range commonly recommended for heat adaptation |
| 2–3 weeks | Endurance sports, teams from Northern Europe | Loading and taper phases can be planned within the camp |
Daytime temperatures in Istanbul in June are usually 25–30 °C, with high humidity. The heat-adaptation protocol should be set by the team’s medical staff; camp logistics (training times, shade, water, cooling) are built to support it.
What to look for in a hotel
- Distance to the venue: traffic is the biggest time cost in Istanbul. A hotel more than 15–20 minutes from the training venue costs a team training twice a day an hour on the road every day.
- Athlete rhythm: early breakfast, late dinner, a quiet floor and blackout curtains.
- Kitchen flexibility: athlete menus, allergen management, halal and vegetarian options, post-training snacks.
- Shared spaces: a video-analysis and meeting room, a physio/massage room, an ice machine, laundry service.
- Equipment: secure storage for bikes, canoes or oversized bags.
Choosing a training venue
Needs vary by sport: a 50 m pool and lane time for swimmers, a track and throwing area for athletes, the right floor and ceiling height for indoor sports, mat space for combat sports, safe water access for rowing and canoeing, the right wall type for climbers. In every case, ask:
- Is the venue reserved for another team or for official use during the Games period?
- Is the time slot guaranteed in writing, or “subject to availability”?
- Are changing rooms, showers, first aid and a strength gym on the same site?
- What is the real journey time from the hotel in morning and evening traffic?
Venue availability should always be confirmed by an inspection (on site or by video) and a written booking.
Non-accredited staff and families
Official quotas are limited; extra coaches, physios, analysts, sponsor representatives and athletes’ families usually fall outside official accommodation. Keeping this group in one room block at a hotel close to the athletes makes both communication and transfers easier.
Delegation logistics checklist
- Room block option and cancellation terms (Q1 2027)
- Venue booking and training schedule (in writing)
- Airport (IST/SAW) meet-and-greet, vehicle for oversized equipment
- Hotel–venue transfer times with a traffic buffer
- Menu sign-off and allergen list
- Health insurance and nearest hospital details
- Local SIM/communications, Turkish–English coordinator
- Invoice currency (USD, EUR, GBP) and payment schedule
How we help
Kurumsal Sporlar is a TÜRSAB-licensed travel agency (A-12558) and a sports event organiser: we manage hotels, transfers and venues under one project manager. See our athlete accommodation and training facility package, or our Istanbul 2027 European Games guide for general information. We can also plan a corporate spectator package for sponsor and guest groups travelling with your delegation.
Kurumsal Sporlar is not an official supplier of the EOC or the Istanbul 2027 organising committee. Heat adaptation and training planning remain the responsibility of the team’s own medical and technical staff.
