Strategic Thinking and Planning Training: A Sport-Based Programme with Resource Management

Training that works on planning, prioritising and rebuilding the plan under a limited budget, short time and changing conditions — through racing simulators, chess, orienteering and more.

Our strategic thinking and planning training helps teams connect long-term goals with short-term decisions, allocate resources by priority and re-plan quickly when the plan breaks. Participants experience this by running a racing team on a fixed budget or choosing a route against the clock — not by listening. The programme runs with one facilitator and a group of up to 30 in a meeting room, in 3–4 hours.

What does strategic thinking training develop?

Short answer: Strategic thinking training develops the ability to see tomorrow’s consequence of today’s decision, to decide what not to do and to direct limited resources to where they create the most value. Planning ties that decision to time, roles and budget. When the two do not work together, either a good strategy stays on paper or a hard-working team heads in the wrong direction.

Who is it for?

  • Leadership teams: to build a shared language before the annual planning and budget cycle.
  • Project and operations teams: to prioritise when everything looks urgent and capacity is short.
  • Strategy, product and business development teams: to think in scenarios under competitor moves and uncertainty.
  • New managers: moving from operational work to a strategic view.

What do participants start doing differently?

  • They ask “what will we not do?” before writing a plan.
  • They prioritise resources (budget, time, people) by impact instead of spreading them evenly.
  • They write down the assumption a plan rests on and agree in advance what happens if it fails.
  • They make “plan versus actual” reviews a habit after each decision.

At the heart of the training is our racing simulator strategy programme; chess, orienteering and pacing programmes are added to fit the team. For a need centred on decisions under uncertainty, see our problem solving and decision making programme.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does strategic thinking training take?
A single programme takes 3–4 hours. A full day combines two or three programmes with a close-out session; leadership teams can also run a four-week series with one session a week.
How many people can take part?
The standard format is one facilitator and up to 30 people. Larger groups run in parallel groups.
Is the racing simulator required?
No. The simulator is our flagship programme, but chess, orienteering and pacing programmes work on the same competencies without it. The design is chosen to fit the venue and group.
Can the training reflect our own strategy?
Yes. Scenarios and the closing action plan are adapted to your agenda, sector and annual goals.
How is the impact measured?
A short self-assessment on prioritisation, use of resources and adapting to plan changes is taken at the start and end; team-level results are reported to HR.
Is a certificate issued?
Participants can receive a certificate of attendance. The programme is not an academic or official certification; its aim is behaviour change in the team.
