Technology Companies Football Cup: what it is and how it works

The Technology Companies Football Cup is a sector-specific corporate football tournament in which software, IT and technology companies take part with teams of their own employees. The cup is not tied to a fixed date: it opens through pre-registration and the calendar is set together with the participating companies.

Who it is for

Software and SaaS companies, IT services firms and system integrators, cyber security firms, game studios, telecom and hardware companies, and start-ups based in technology parks can take part. Marketplace and e-commerce companies have their own E-Commerce Football Cup.

Why it works in the technology sector

Hybrid and remote teams. In technology companies, much of the workforce mostly sees colleagues on a screen. A football cup brings together, at regular intervals, people who work on the same project but are rarely in the same room. Match days can be aligned with the company's office days, giving people one more reason to come in.

Cross-functional teams. One team can field developers, product managers, sales and support staff side by side. Teams who usually reach each other through tickets play towards the same goal on the pitch.

Employer brand and hiring. Competition for skilled engineers is intense, and candidates follow company culture on social media. Photos and short videos from match day can be used on the careers page and on LinkedIn, and fielding a team in a sector cup puts the company on the same stage as its competitors.

The sector's calendar constraint

What drives attendance here is not shift work but release and sprint calendars. Major release weeks, end-of-sprint demo days, year-end code freezes and on-call rotations all affect who is available on match day. Therefore:

  • Release calendars and on-call patterns are collected from teams at the outset, and those weeks are kept out of the fixture list.
  • Matches are mainly played in after-work evening slots; weekend slots are optional.
  • Pitches are chosen close to technology parks and business district clusters.
  • A reserve week is kept in the fixture list, and a postponement rule for an unexpected production incident is agreed in advance.

Tournament format

  • Squad: 6+1 (six outfield players plus a goalkeeper) on artificial turf is standard; 7+1 can be arranged depending on the pitch. Squads are 10–12 people including substitutes.
  • Number of teams: A company can enter more than one team.
  • Stages: Group stage and knockout rounds; the final and the award ceremony take place on the same day.
  • Mixed teams: A mixed-team rule requiring women on the pitch can be agreed with the participants.

What the organisation covers

  • Pitch planning and booking, fixtures and score tracking
  • A referee for every match
  • First aid and a medical officer on site
  • Kit option: companies can play in their own kit or have printed team kits supplied by the organisation
  • Trophy, medals and a finals-day award ceremony
  • Match-day photography, with an optional short video package

Calendar and taking part

The cup calendar is set together with the participating companies; there is no fixed date. The process works like this:

  1. Pre-registration: Send the number of teams, city and suitable days through the quote form.
  2. Calendar: Once enough companies have pre-registered, the fixture list is built around their release calendars and shared with participants.
  3. Quote: A quote is prepared for your company based on the number of teams, kit preference and pitch plan.

Companies that want to start before enough sector participation has formed can run the same format as an internal cup with their own department teams.

Other sector cups

Sector cups currently open for pre-registration: Logistics Football Cup, Finance Football Cup, Energy Football Cup, E-Commerce Football Cup, Retail Companies Football Cup, Pharma and Healthcare Football Cup. If your company would rather run its own tournament or a season-long league instead of a sector cup, see the corporate football tournament and five-a-side league page.

Technology Companies Football Cup: frequently asked questions

When does the Technology Companies Football Cup take place?

The cup has no fixed date; the calendar is set together with the companies that pre-register. Once enough companies have joined, the fixture list is built around their release and sprint calendars and shared with participants.

Which companies can take part?

Software, SaaS, IT services, system integration, cyber security, gaming, telecom and hardware companies, as well as technology park start-ups, can take part. Teams are made up of the company's own employees; marketplace and e-commerce companies have a separate E-Commerce Football Cup.

Can remote team members play in the team?

Yes, they can, and match days can be aligned with the company's office days for that reason. Evening slots and a fixture list shared well in advance make it easier for employees joining from other cities to plan.

What is the squad size and match format?

The standard format is 6+1 on artificial turf with a squad of 10–12 including substitutes; 7+1 can be arranged depending on the pitch. The tournament is played as a group stage followed by knockout rounds, with the final and award ceremony on the same day.

What happens if a match falls in a release week?

This rarely happens, because release and code-freeze weeks are kept out of the fixture list from the start. Even so, a postponement rule for an unexpected production incident is agreed in advance and a reserve week is kept in the fixture list.

How do we pre-register?

Pre-registration is done through the quote form. You send the number of teams, city and suitable days, and a quote is then prepared for your company based on kit preference and pitch plan.
