Retail Companies Football Cup: what it is and how it works

The Retail Companies Football Cup is a sector-specific corporate football tournament in which chain stores and retail companies take part with teams drawn from their store, regional and head office staff. The cup is not tied to a fixed date: it opens through pre-registration and the calendar is set together with the participating companies.

Who it is for

Grocery, fashion, electronics, cosmetics, home and DIY chains, shopping-centre retailers, franchise networks, and the head office and distribution centre teams of retail companies can take part.

Why it works in retail

Visibility for store staff. In retail, most corporate events stay at head office, while store teams are the largest and least connected part of the company. A cup played by store and regional teams brings front-line staff to the forefront of the company.

Engagement and retention. In a sector with high staff turnover, doing something tangible about belonging matters. Wearing the regional team's kit turns rivalry between stores into a positive channel.

A natural fit with the regional structure. Retail companies are already organised through regional management. When teams follow that structure, the cup needs no extra organisational chart.

Retail's calendar constraint

Two items make planning hard in this sector: store shifts and the campaign calendar. Weekends are the busiest trading days, while back-to-school, the November sales, New Year, the weeks before religious holidays and end-of-season sales are periods when every team is on the shop floor. Therefore:

  • No matches are scheduled at weekends; they are placed on weekdays when store traffic is low.
  • For store teams, morning and afternoon slots are combined with late-evening slots after store closing; shift rosters are collected from teams at the outset.
  • Campaign weeks and the weeks before holidays are kept out of the fixture list.
  • Pitches are chosen close to where stores are concentrated; head office location is not the deciding factor.

Tournament format

  • Squad: 6+1 (six outfield players plus a goalkeeper) on artificial turf is standard; 7+1 can be arranged depending on the pitch. Because of shifts, squads can be extended to 12 people including substitutes.
  • Teams: A company can enter a separate team from each regional directorate.
  • Stages: For multi-city entries, a regional group stage followed by knockout rounds; the final is played in a single city.
  • Mixed teams: A mixed-team rule that suits the make-up of store teams can be agreed with the participants.

What the organisation covers

  • Pitch planning and booking, slot planning around shifts, fixtures and score tracking
  • A referee for every match
  • First aid and a medical officer on site
  • Kit option: companies can play in their own kit or have printed kits supplied for each regional team
  • Trophy, medals and a finals-day award ceremony
  • Match-day photography, with an optional short video for internal communication

Calendar and taking part

The cup calendar is set together with the participating companies; there is no fixed date. The process works like this:

  1. Pre-registration: Send the number of teams and regions, cities and suitable days through the quote form.
  2. Calendar: Once enough companies have pre-registered, the fixture list is built around their campaign calendars and shared with participants.
  3. Quote: A quote is prepared for your company based on the number of teams, kit preference and pitch plan.

Companies with a large store network can also run the same format as an internal cup played only by their own regional teams.

Other sector cups

Sector cups currently open for pre-registration: Logistics Football Cup, Finance Football Cup, Energy Football Cup, E-Commerce Football Cup, Technology Companies Football Cup, Pharma and Healthcare Football Cup. If your company would rather run its own tournament or a season-long league instead of a sector cup, see the corporate football tournament and five-a-side league page.

Retail Companies Football Cup: frequently asked questions

When does the Retail Companies Football Cup take place?

The cup has no fixed date; the calendar is set together with the companies that pre-register. Campaign periods and the weeks before holidays are excluded from the start, and matches are played on weekdays.

Which companies can take part?

Grocery, fashion, electronics, cosmetics, home and DIY chains, shopping-centre retailers and franchise networks can take part. Teams can be formed from store, regional, head office and distribution centre staff.

How can store staff take part given their shifts?

The fixture list is built around store shifts: matches are spread across weekday morning, afternoon and late-evening slots after store closing. Shift rosters are collected from teams at the outset and squads are kept large with substitutes.

Why are no matches played at weekends?

Matches are scheduled on weekdays because weekends are retail's busiest trading days. A weekend match would leave out most store staff and strain store operations.

How do regional teams in different cities compete?

For multi-city entries, regional groups are formed and the final is played in a single city. Regional teams play their group matches in their own city, and only the teams that reach the final travel.

How do we pre-register?

Pre-registration is done through the quote form. You send the number of teams and regions, cities and suitable days, and a quote is then prepared for your company based on kit preference and pitch plan.
